STEP - North West Only
Systemwide Training and Employment Passport

STEP is a platform that holds all your Core Skills training records in one place. This means you only need to complete your Core Skills mandatory training when it is due to expire, not each time you move to a new placement.

- Background to STEP
The North West Lead Employer Training and Employment Passport (STEP) is an online passport that allows the transfer of mandatory training and employment information between organisations to support the greater mobility of the healthcare workforce, and to reduce the duplication of training. It has been developed in collaboration with Health Education England and St. Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
The Passport system was launched in June 2019, with the training module containing information on core NHS statutory and mandatory training, as per the Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF). Only verified users at the Host Organisations are able to access the system and view a colleague's information.
Benefits of STEP
Please visit the dropdown options to find out more about the key benefits of STEP;
- Ease of Access
STEP is an employment passport system that stores your training records in one place. Following your completion of mandatory training via your Lead Employer ESR self-service or e-LfH, the information is updated to the passport system. This then allows your Host Organisation and future placement (within 12 weeks of rotating) access to these records.
- Assurance
It is particularly relevant to those who move between health care organisations such as colleagues-in-training from all disciplines, nursing students and allied health professional students as it provides assurance that training and employment checks have been completed. This is vital when employees are undertaking a variety of roles and placements as they progress in their careers.
- Versatility
If training has been completed at other trusts outside of the North West that is compliant with the core mandatory training requested, proof of completion can be sent to us and the relevant team will upload this onto STEP to prevent repetition of modules.
- Efficiency
Organisations are able to review your individual training in order to minimise the duplication of effort from undertaking unnecessary training. This gives you more clinical time, allowing you to focus on patient care.
It can also minimise the time spent on employment checks, when transferring placements, jobs, secondments etc. which will also save you time and any additional stress.
- Convenience
The passport has improved user functionality, including the ability to create a Certificate of Training and Achievement, which can be used to evidence any training undertaken. You can also record additional training directly to your profile, allowing you to keep all of your training records in one place.
